The interaction between static quarks is derived by applying many-body techniques to QCD in Coulomb gauge. The result is shown to be exact in the IR and UV limits, and agrees remarkably well with lattice computations.

An overview is given of different approaches to describing the process of deconfine-ment in quantum chromodynamics. The analysis of the known approaches demonstrates that the detailed picture of how deconfinement really occurs has not yet been understood. Therefore, one has to be rather cautious when interpreting experimental signals as attributed to deconfinement.
